Atlas-based Segmentation using a Model of Lesion Growth

چکیده
We propose a method for brain atlas deformation in presence of large space-occupying tumors or lesions, based on an a priori model of lesion growth that assumes radial expansion of the lesion from its central point. Atlas-based methods have been of limited use for segmenting brains that have been drastically altered by the presence of large space-occupying lesions. Our approach involves four steps. First, an affine registration brings the atlas and the patient into global correspondence. Secondly, a local registration warps the atlas onto the patient volume. Then, the seeding of a synthetic tumor into the brain atlas provides a template for the lesion. The last step is the deformation of the seeded atlas, combining a method derived from optical flow principles and a model of lesion growth. Results show that a good registration is performed and that method can be applied to automatic segmentation of structures and substructures in brains with gross deformation, with important medical applications in neurosurgery, radiosurgery and

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...

Atlas registration is a recognized paradigm for the automatic segmentation of normal MR brain images. Unfortunately, atlas-based segmentation has been of limited use in presence of large space-occupying lesions. In fact, brain deformations induced by such lesions are added to normal anatomical variability and they may dramatically shift and deform anatomically or functionally important brain st...
متن کاملSegmentation of brain structures in presence of a space-occupying lesion.
Brain deformations induced by space-occupying lesions may result in unpredictable position and shape of functionally important brain structures. The aim of this study is to propose a method for segmentation of brain structures by deformation of a segmented brain atlas in presence of a space-occupying lesion. Our approach is based on an a priori model of lesion growth (MLG) that assumes radial e...
متن کاملWhite Matter MS-Lesion Segmentation Using a Geometric Brain Model
Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) shows regions of signal abnormalities, named plaques or lesions. The spatial lesion distribution plays a major role for MS diagnosis. In this paper we present a 3D MS-lesion segmentation method based on an adaptive geometric brain model. We model the topological properties of the lesions and brain tissues in order t...
